Claroline 1.8 feature list

Claroline 1.8 integrates lots of new features and improvements in its interface. The following page should allow you to get a quick overview of this promising release.

Design, interface and Layout

  • New default css
  • TinyMCE is now the new default WYSIWYG editor of Claroline, but this is now an option you can choose in the administration interface of Claroline (Htmlarea will remain available for example)
  • You can add flash animation (.swf) in your text area.

Module administration on the platform

  • Create or install your own tools for Claroline and share them with the community
  • Customise your platform courses tool lists by activating or deactivating existing tools in Claroline for all the courses at once
  • Cutomise the existing banners and menu in Claroline by adding your own content or links,...
  • Some examples of modules soon available :
    • a "who is online" module : download it from the cvs here and test it with Claroline 1.8
    • a survey tool to create and use survey's in your courses
    • a complete search engine based on phpdig, using xml based indexation and metadata's
    • a module to add a custom text in each display area (textzone)
    • and lots of other tools to come...

User rights and profiles are now completely customizable

  • Change profiles rights (none, user, manager) in your courses, tool by tool for every existing profile
  • Create new profiles and define their given rights

Class management improved

  • Ability to subscribe/unsubscribe a class from a course

Language management

  • Refactoring of the language system in Claroline, allowing to create new pages in Claroline in a much easier way to make it translatable right from its beginning.
  • Set a list of available languages on the homepage of Claroline (in a selectbox) in the administration: each user can select his language in his profile or in the homepage.

Ical

  • Support of ical and rss support in calendar tool. This allow to share information from Claroline courses to applications like Google Calendar or other portails supporting those standards.

  • User can now consult a public course right from his personal homepage
  • User can search a public course

Course Tools

Course home page

  • Add several text blocks in course home page
  • Add ressource to text block with the linker

Documents

  • Download a full directory in a zip file
  • Improve support of secure downloaded document (compatibility with more web servers)
  • Avoid use of .htaccess to use .url files.

Assignments

  • The work tool interface has been changed, beeing now more intuitive for the students.
  • Mail notification in the assignment tool. Teachers receive a mail on new submission and students receive a mail on teacher's feedback.

Exercises

Completely refactored exercise tool : no big feature change in this tool, but a huge refactoring of its code has been done (now fully object-oriented).

  • support of the IMS-QTI 2.0 standard, allowing to export and import standardized exercises. This feature will also be very useful to create backup of your existing exercises or to reuse them in other courses.
  • One question per page : add button to previous questions, submit all and finish.
  • Add flv (adobe flash video in question)

Wiki

  • Search function in the wiki tool

Group tool properties

  • Each group can now be deactivated
  • Every tool in a group can now be set to private or public

Course subscription

  • Course manager can add a key on subscription
  • Platform admin can add a text to explain procedure to join a locked course
  • Platform admin can add a text to explain procedure to join a course protected by a key

Configuration

  • New display with tabulation
  • New configuration :
    • Language to display
    • Session lost warning
    • Profile sql
    • Editor
    • Profile form : Which parts of the profile can be changed? (Name, Official Code, Login, Password, Email, Phone and/or Language)
    • Authentication, cas and sso
